Myth 1: My ranking is my ranking everywhere
A Google Maps ranking isn’t a fixed property of a business — it’s a function of where the search happens. A business can sit at position 1 for a search made 200 meters from its own address and be completely invisible three kilometers further out, because proximity is a core input to the local pack’s ranking, and proximity changes with every meter. Myth 2: My rank checker’s #2 means #2 in the map pack
Google shows two different result sets for local-intent searches — the local pack (the map-based block) and organic results below it — ranked by different signals. Organic authority (content, backlinks) doesn’t override local-pack proximity, and a strong local pack position doesn’t require strong organic rankings either. Myth 3: Desktop and mobile show the same results
The same search, from the same address, can return a different set of businesses in the local pack depending on whether it’s run as a desktop or mobile query — the two aren’t guaranteed to match. Checking only one and assuming it represents both means half of a business’s actual searchers could be seeing something different than what was measured. Myth 4: An average ranking tells the whole story
Averaging only the points where a business was actually found — the standard “average position” most tools report — quietly drops every point where it didn’t show up in the top 20 at all, which can be the majority of a struggling service area. That average can look respectable while describing a much smaller, better-performing slice of reality than the business’s whole footprint. Myth 5: One ranking check tells me whether my SEO work is working
A single scan is a snapshot of one moment, not evidence of a trend. “We went from #4 to #2” said about one point, once, isn’t proof of anything systematic — it could be normal fluctuation rather than the result of any specific work. What actually demonstrates movement is running the same grid configuration again later and comparing the two, point by point, with points explicitly marked improved, worsened, new or lost — a structured before/after, not a single before-and-after story told from memory.
Why these five keep showing up together
None of these myths come from bad-faith claims — they come from tools and habits built around a single measurement being asked to answer questions a single measurement structurally can’t answer: where, which result set, which device, how much, and compared to what.
