A ranking is a place, not a number
“We rank #2 for dentist in Cologne” sounds like a fact. It’s actually a fact about one specific point on a map — usually wherever the rank check happened to be measured from. Move that same search a few streets over, and the position can be completely different, because Google Maps’ local pack is ranked heavily by proximity: how close the person searching is to each business matters as much as how well-optimized that business’s listing is.
That means a business can genuinely be true in two contradictory ways at once — ranked #1 for searches made 200 meters from its front door, and nowhere in the top 20 for the same search made three kilometers away. Neither number is a mistake. They’re both accurate descriptions of different points in the same city.
Why a single check misses this
A traditional rank tracker measures one keyword from one location and reports one position. That’s genuinely useful information — it’s just information about a single point, presented as if it described the whole picture. A business owner who only sees “we’re #2” has no way of knowing whether that #2 holds up across their entire service area or collapses two neighborhoods over. The bad news — “we’ve lost visibility south of the river” — never shows up in a single-point check, because the check was never run from south of the river.

For a business, it means “we rank well” and “we’re losing customers from nearby neighborhoods” can both be true simultaneously — and only a location-aware check will show which neighborhoods those are. For an agency or a sales team, it’s the difference between a spreadsheet a prospect has to take on faith and a red patch on a map next to their own street, which tends to make the case for itself. Both readings roll up into ATRP, the average that folds not-found points into the picture instead of dropping them, and into SoLV, the share of the map actually won.
