Why Your Google Ranking Isn't One Number

Search your own business on Google Maps right now and you’ll get a position. Third. Seventh. First, if you’re lucky. It feels like an answer. It isn’t one — it’s a single sample from a result that changes with every meter you move.

A business can sit at position one two hundred meters from its own front door and disappear entirely three kilometers down the road. Both of those are true at the same time, for the same business, on the same day. A rank checker that reports “you’re #3” is reporting the view from exactly one point on the map — usually the point closest to the business itself, which is also the point most likely to look good. That’s not a lie, but it’s not the whole picture either, and the gap between the two is exactly where local SEO budgets go to die quietly.

How Google actually decides who shows up

This isn’t a quirk of one tool’s methodology — it’s how Google Maps ranking is built. Google’s own guidance on local ranking names three factors: relevance, distance, and prominence. Distance is doing more work in that list than most people give it credit for. A search for “dentist” doesn’t return the same map pack for two people standing a few kilometers apart, because Google is trying to answer a question that’s inherently local: what’s near this specific searcher, right now.

That means “our ranking” was never a single, stable fact about a business — it’s a function of where the question gets asked. Ask it from across town and you get a different answer, sometimes a completely different one. A tool that only ever asks from one location is only ever answering a fraction of the real question.

What “we’re #2” actually hides

Picture a business that ranks second for its main keyword, checked from its own address. Good news, worth a screenshot. Now check the same keyword from a neighborhood two districts over — the one their delivery drivers actually reach, the one their newest reviews mention. The business isn’t second there. It isn’t in the top twenty. It simply doesn’t exist on that map, and nobody in the business knew, because nobody ever asked the question from that neighborhood.

This is the exact failure mode local businesses run into: they see “we’re #2” and wonder why the phone isn’t ringing from the next suburb over. The rank check said everything was fine. The map, if anyone had drawn one, would have shown a shrinking green patch surrounded by red and gray.

The fix isn’t a smarter single rank check — it’s asking the question at enough points to see the shape of the answer. For a local-SEO agency or freelancer, the map is the pitch: a heatmap that’s green downtown and red or gray past the ring road makes the problem obvious to a prospect in the time it takes to look at it, and a later scan run against the same grid is the before/after proof that the work moved something. For a sales team opening a first conversation, it’s a door-opener that needs no explanation of methodology — “here’s exactly where you’re losing customers” is a visual argument a spreadsheet can’t make. For an ambitious business with more than one location or heavy competition, it’s the difference between guessing which neighborhoods to chase and knowing, point by point, where competitors are actually winning.
